WINNER—Grand Prize, DOC NYC 2011
“[An] urgent, informative and artfully assembled documentary.” – The New York Times

Wind power is green, good, and reduces our dependency on foreign oil. That’s what the people of Meredith, in upstate New York first thought when a wind developer looked to supplement this farm town’s failing economy with a farm of their own, a wind farm with 40 industrial wind turbines. Attracted at first to the financial incentives, residents grow increasingly alarmed as they discover side effects they never dreamed of, including the potential for disturbing financial scams. With wind development growing rapidly at 39% annually in North  America, Windfall is an eye-opener for anyone concerned about the future of renewable energy.

Director Laura Israel will take part in a post-screening Skype discussion on Monday, June 11 at 9:15 p.m. and Wednesday, June 13 at 6:45 p.m.
More at the The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema website, where tickets can be bought, friends invited, and the trailer viewed.

  1. It’s a great documentary and well worth the watch.... a real life presentation of how IWTs split communities apart long before the first one is built. I thought about it the other day when I watched this news piece from Australia since this is what happens after the IWTs come in. http://www.todaytonightadelaide.com.au/?page=Story&StoryID=1394

Windfall is set in rural New York and the situation mirrors Ontario’s plight very well except for one important aspect which becomes quite striking as the documentary unfolds. In Ontario, there could never be an outcome like there was in New York... that’s because McGuinty removed the power from the municipalities to say no. In NY, the residents fought back and took over council.... in Ontario, that might be interesting but it essentially gets you a big fat zero in terms of the fight. Anyone who thinks that this is a ‘free country’ obviously has never experienced the way IWTs are being rammed down Ontario’s throat.
